10 inch server racks and 3d printers
my homelab was a mess, i bought some old wooden box from the ikea second chance market and put all my servers in there: two thinkcentre m73 tiny, a single rpi4, an 8 port switch, an icybox jbod and a small openwrt router. and the things that couldn’t fit like my router just sat behind or above it, and then there was cables, and whenever i wanted something (like creating a backup of my nas) i had to pull half of the things out. that was freaking annoying.
because a coworker bought a simple and cheap 10 inch server rack i figured that maybe i could use one of those as well. and then i found a 12u 10 inch server rack that fit my existing sideboard in my office perfectly. bought some accessories as well (two 4 port power plugs) and a plate for the jbod.
and the rest - and this is probably the great difference to 19 inch racks - i just printed the rest. supernice!
and here we go, it’s working like a charm, i had to remove the glass door because in the standard setup the mount bars (?) were too far back for the cable plugs (power, usb, ethernet on the tinies) to fit, but in the topmost config the ethernet cables were too far out as well. and i’d rather have a backplate than a glass door (which i never see since the sideboard has sliding doors as well).
but now we’re set. i’ll probably add some fans to the sideboard or other ventilation so the air is not stale in there, but apart from that i’m happy now with this setup. cables are gone, noise (especially the fan noise of the icy box jbod was annoying) is gone.
